Guest Speaker: BILL SHAW (Hon.)

Olney Friends School is honored to announce our virtual guest speaker next week, Friday March 19th at 7:00 PM EST. William P. "Bill" Shaw (Hon.) will speak on the topic of “Olney and the World; the World and Olney."
Bill earned the bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biology from Bowling Green State University. After two years teaching at Wright State University (Dayton), he was invited to join the faculty of Semester at Sea, an undergraduates’ shipboard program that sails around the world each semester. Based then at Chapman University (Orange, CA), the program now operates from Colorado State University (Ft. Collins).
The shipboard experience changed Bill’s life and career path. Visiting over 30 countries around the world gave him a new, global perspective on our common humanity and the finite nature of Earth, our shared home. After earning his PhD in International Studies and Higher Education Administration from Miami University (OH), Bill joined the Charles F. Kettering Foundation as International Programs Officer.
Ten years later, Bill founded Crosscurrents International Institute as an outgrowth of the Kettering Foundation’s work. As its Founder and President, he has spent over 30 years working with other non-profits organizations to bring together people from different cultures, nations, religions, political systems. Bill says that helping people around the world to overcome ethnocentrism puts Crosscurrents in the “education” business.
After his son Alex (Barchenkov ’92) graduated from Olney Friends School, Bill became an honorary alumnus through ten years of service with our Board of Trustees. His presentation will share stories from his work with a focus on building friendships, networks, trust, and the connections with Olney.
This event will be conducted through Zoom and is open to the greater Olney Community. If you would like an invitation to this event, please email
We hope you can join us for this wonderful speaker.
