Olney Friends School is honored to announce our virtual guest speaker this Friday March 5th, 2021, at 7:00 PM EST will be alumnus David Fankhauser ('59). The presentation topic is “Freedom Rides of the US Civil Rights Movement."
After graduating from Olney Friends Boarding School, David studied Chemistry at Central State College, the only public historically black college (HBCU) in Ohio. He completed his BA in Chemistry from Earlham College (Indiana) and earned a PhD in Biology from John's Hopkins University (Maryland). In Jackson Mississippi in 1961, David became one of the first Freedom Riders to be arrested. Protesting the illegal segregation of interstate facilities throughout the South, the Freedom Rides helped the Civil Rights movement to go national, and led to the eventual integration of interstate public facilities.
David has received awards and honors for: excellence in teaching, outstanding student relations, innovative laboratory programs, and web sites supporting science teaching and homesteading skills. He has also received recognition for social activism: in the Civil Rights Movement, on the dangers of nuclear power and weapons, and on the threats to our environment from economic exploitation.
This event will be conducted through Zoom and is open to the greater Olney Community. If you would like an invitation to this event, please email email@example.com.
We hope you can join us for this wonderful speaker.
